Tuesday, 30 June, 2009: RABAT (Reuters) - Three newspapers were ordered by a
Moroccan court to pay Libya a total of 3 million dirhams ($372,300) in damages on
Monday for defaming its leader Muammar Gaddafi. The papers were also fined 100,000
dirhams ($12,410) each for "attacks on the character and the dignity of a head of
state", Moroccan official news agency MAP reported. Defence lawyers said the case
was flawed because Gaddafi is not formally head of state in Libya but is known simply
as "Brother Leader and Guide of the Revolution". "This (trial) is a blow for press
freedom in Morocco and an attempt to execute the press," Morocco's National Press
Union said in a statement ahead of the verdict. [Reuters]

Wednesday, 3 June, 2009: Casablanca - Human rights activists Monday slammed
Libya for filing a defamation suit against three Moroccan newspapers accused of
slandering strongman Moamer Gathafi and bemoaning his iron-fisted rule. The Libyan
embassy pressed charges against Al Massae, Al Jarida Al Oula and Al Ahdat Al
Maghribiya newspapers for criticising Gathafi and Tripoli's rights record. Several
gathered outside the court in Casablanca brandishing anti-Gathafi placards. "Gathafi
behaves like a lion in front of Arabs and Africans but is like a rabbit when he faces
Westerners," a placard said. Ali Anouzla, one of three journalists named in the libel
suit, said: "I wrote in February in an article that there is no democracy in North Africa,
including Libya. I stick to this stand." The trial was deferred to June 15. [Middle East

Monday, 29 June, 2009: Ousted Madagascar president Marc Ravalomanana has
arrived in Libya ahead of an African Union summit, where he will meet leaders to
discuss his country's crisis, his office said Sunday. "President Ravalomanana will

continue to work closely with all parties interested in finding a peaceful and lasting
solution to the crisis in Madagascar," said a statement. The ex-president of the Indian
Ocean island, now living in exile in South Africa, was toppled three months ago
following street protests that saw opposition leader Andry Rajoelina take power with
the army's blessing. "He will meet with heads of state to discuss the crisis in
Madagascar" in Sirte, where African leaders start a three-day summit on Wednesday.

announced Sunday the Algerian presidency in a statement. “Investing in agriculture to
achieve economic growth and food security is the main theme of this summit from 1
to 3 July, reads the text. The Heads of State and Government of the AU will also
discuss peace issue on the African continent and the transformation of the authority
of the AU, it added. President Bouteflika will also participate in the summits of the
NEPAD (New Partnership for Africa's Development) and the African Peer Review
mechanism (APRM) scheduled Tuesday in Sirte, according to the same source.

Monday, 29 June, 2009: Libya has withdrawn most of its assets from Swiss bank
accounts in a continuing diplomatic crisis between the two countries. The north
African country last year pulled out SFr5.6 billion ($5.2 billion) of its SFr5.75 billion
deposited in Swiss banks, according to statistics by the Swiss National Bank. The
Swiss foreign ministry said it had no detailed figures on Libyan assets in Switzerland,
but a withdrawal had no little economic impact. In 2007 Libyan assets made up 0.3 per
cent of all foreign assets in Swiss banks. Relations between the two countries have
been strained since one of the sons of the Libyan leader, Moammar Gaddafi, was

arrested in Geneva last July, charged with assaulting two domestic employees. [Swiss

Saturday, 27 June, 2009: Exxon Mobil Corp. on Friday said it was beginning to drill the
first of three deepwater exploration wells off the coast of Libya, as the company
increases activity in the oil-rich nation. Tim Cejka, Exxon's head of exploration, said in
an interview with the Wall Street Journal that the deepwater exploration program
would start in the next couple days. Exxon, the world's largest publicly traded oil
company by market value and output, won exploration rights in licensing rounds three
years ago and was also awarded another exploration block directly by the government.
With about 44 billion barrels of proven oil reserves, the eighth most in the world, Libya
is an enticing region for Western oil companies. Exxon, based in Irving, Texas, first
discovered oil there in 1960 but left the country in 1986 when Washington prohibited
U.S. oil companies from investing there. The U.S. ended its official designation of Libya
as a terrorism sponsor in 2006. [WSJ]

Yunis, held talks on Tuesday with Egypt's Minister of Manpower and Immigration
focused on the growing problem of illegal Egyptian workers in Libya. As the situation
has become intolerable regarding the huge number of illegal workers in Libya which is
estimated to be at more than one million, Libya is undertaking concrete measures
whereby Law no 6 of 1987 would be put into effect, JANA reported. The law regulates
the presence of foreign workers in the country. General Yunis explained to the
Egyptian minister the pattern of procedures followed by Libyan authorities and the
need for full cooperation on the part of Egypt in this regard. Meanwhile, Libyan officials
have extended the deadline for foreign workers until 30 July instead of 30 June to get
their legal status in the country sorted out. The extension is publicly directed only to

measures taken by all services involved in the fight against the disease. The
participants stressed the importance to sensitise citizens on the disease and decided

Manila via Qatar airways, and that the other 5 will be booked soon while looking for an

Friday, 26 June, 2009: The 18th ordinary session of the African Union's
Representatives Committee opened on Wednesday evening in Syrte, central Libya.
The meeting is being held preparatory to the 13th AU Summit in Libya, expected to
focus among others on the transformation of the AU Commission into an Authority as
part of the goal of setting up the United States of Africa. The African leaders, who will
get together at the beginning of July in Syrte, are also expected to discuss the
investment in agriculture in order to achieve economic growth and food security on

Friday, 26 June, 2009: (ANSAmed) - Three weeks ago getting a tourist visa to visit
Libya suddenly became more complicated and the result is a steep decline in the
number of new tourist arrivals to the country. The new rules do not allow tourists to
pick up their visa directly in the airport, as used to happen before. Now it can only be
released by Libyan embassies and consulates located in the countries of origin, and a
lot of paperwork is also needed. For example, a six month passport visa requires a
bilingual stamp, health insurance worth 30,000 euros, a bank statement covering the
past 6 months, an invitation by a local travel agency, a hotel reservation and a return
airline ticket. Once the mentioned paperwork has been submitted, the request will be
processed in 10 to 12 days. However, the Libyan embassy in Rome and the consulate
in Milan are hard pressed to meet demand (partly because of limited office hours) and
many have had to change their travel schedule. [ANSAmed]

Thursday, 25 June, 2009: SINGAPORE- Hyflux Ltd, a global integrated environmental
solutions company listed on the Singapore Stock Exchange, today announced that it
will develop two seawater desalination plants in Libya. In a statement, the company
said it had entered into a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) with General Desalination
Company (GDC), the commercial arm of the Libyan Ministry of Utilities. Under the
MoA, both sides would undertake to conclude negotiations and reach agreement for
the establishment of a number of joint venture companies to develop the two plants in
Tripoli and Benghazi. The Tripoli plant will have the capacity to desalinate 500,000
cubic metres of seawater per day, while the Benghazi plant can process 400,000 cubic
metres per day. The company said similar to the seawater desalination plants under
current construction by Hyflux, the plants in Libya would use Hyflux’s ultra filtration

Thursday, 25 June, 2009: The foreign ministry is attempting to set up a meeting
between Swiss President Hans-Rudolf Merz and Libyan leader Moammar Gaddafi. The
aim is to clear the air between the two countries. Relations have been strained since
Gaddafi's son and his wife were arrested in Geneva last July and charged with
assaulting two domestic employees. Swiss Foreign Minister Micheline Calmy-Rey
revealed the behind the scenes efforts to set up a meeting in a meeting with
journalists. She did not specify whether a date had already been agreed. Discussions
are ongoing and "we are making all possible and imaginable efforts and are being very
creative in those efforts", Calmy-Rey said. Merz confirmed he was approached by a
high-ranking personality during a recent visit to the United Arab Emirates and agreed

Wednesday, 24 June, 2009: (SIRTE) - Sudanese First Vice President and President of
southern Sudan government arrived today to Sirte airport where he will hold a series
of meetings on Libyan contribution to southern Sudan development. Following his
arrival Salva Kiir Mayadrit held a meeting with the Libyan Secretary General of the
General People’s Committee (Prime minister) Al-Baghdadi Ali Al-Mahmudi. The
meeting was also attended by the Libyan ministers of foreign affairs, finance, the
directors of Libyan foundation for investment and the Secretary for cooperation. The
talks dealt with ways to strengthen the joint cooperation in areas of economic

Tuesday, 23 June, 2009: CALGARY - Libya's National Oil Company is accusing
Verenex Energy Inc. (TSX:VNX) of improperly bidding for exploration rights in the
North African country four years ago - allegations that further complicate the
company's planned sale to a Chinese firm. Libya's NOC sent two letters last week
accusing Verenex of being improperly pre-qualified to bid for the Area 47 oil property
acquired in 2005, Verenex said Monday. "It seems very coincidental, the timing of this
ongoing investigation," said Verenex chief financial officer Ken Hillier in an interview.
Verenex and China National Petroleum Corp. have been waiting since February for the
Libyan government to allow their $499-million, or $10-per-share, takeover deal to go
ahead. The deal cannot proceed without NOC approval. [Canadian Business]

Tuesday, 23 June, 2009: TORONTO (Dow Jones)--Verenex Energy Inc. (VNX.T)
shares fell 23% Monday after the company said Libyan authorities were investigating
the Calgary-based oil and gas company for improper bidding. The news further
complicates the company's proposed sale to China National Petroleum Company

International. Verenex is involved in oil-and-gas exploration and production in Libya's
Ghadames Basin. Last February, Verenex announced that CNPCI had entered into an
agreement to acquire the company at C$10 a share. The sale was contingent on
approval from the Libyan National Oil Company (NOC), which has yet to sanction the
deal. Verenex said the NOC sent the company two letters last week that alleged the
company was illegally pre-qualified for a 2005 bid in which it won the rights to Area 47

Monday, 22 June, 2009: In a bid to promote knowledge-based economic development,
Italy and Libya have launched a strategic partnership in higher education, science and
technology. The launch occurred during the historic first visit of Libyan leader
Muammar Kadhafi to Rome earlier this month. Kadhafi's visit seals a major
rapprochement since Italy signed a deal with its former colony last August pledging
US$5 billion over the next 20 years as compensation for colonising the North African
country from 1911 to 1947. The Libyan-Italian deal became effective in March with
Italy's Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi's visit to the Libyan town Sirte and his formal
apologies for colonialism. The strategic partnership was launched under a treaty on
friendship, partnership and cooperation. It includes bilateral agreements to boost
scientific and technical cooperation in sea resources, student exchanges and

Wednesday, 24 June, 2009: Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi, known as Africa’s King
of kings, arrived on 10 June in Rome on his first visit to Italy, Libya’s former colonial
ruler and now its biggest trading partner. Col Gaddafi - dressed in full military regalia
and heading a 200-member entourage - was given a red-carpet welcome by Italian
Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi at Rome’s Ciampino airport. Col Gaddafi met his
visitors in his Bedouin-style tent which was set up in the park of a 17th Century
Roman villa where he was staying. This is the Libyan leader's first visit to Italy since

Saturday, 13 June, 2009: Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi's three-day official visit to
Italy drew to a close with fresh controversy after he failed to show up to address

deputies in the Italian parliament. Two hours after the scheduled time for his arrival on
Friday, Gianfranco Fini, the speaker of Italy's Chamber of Deputies, decided enough
was enough. "This delay is not justified," Fini told the waiting deputies. "In line with
full respect for institutions, I hereby cancel the meeting and assume total
responsibility," he said, to a round of applause from the deputies, the ANSA news
agency reported. There was confusion at first as to why Gaddafi had failed to turn up

given priority in Libya, any need of Italy will have priority in Libya", said Libyan leader
Muammar Gaddafi today in a speech to members of Confindustria, Italy's main
industrialists' association. Libya, he added, "will not favour other countries at Italy's
expense" and, since Italy "really needs Libya", his country will not provide gas and
petrol to other countries "at Italy's expense" until the pact of friendship and
collaboration is put into effect". Gaddafi made a single warning to Italian companies:
do not seek to corrupt Libyan companies otherwise you will be sent away. "The
Libyan people revolted against colonialism, but also against corruption. With regards to
this, we are very sensitive". And so, "I have warned you", any and all companies

Verenex move stalled by Libya probe
China National Petroleum Corporation's (CNPC) planned $360 million takeover of
Calgary-based Verenex Energy has hit a new hurdle, with the Libyan authorities
launching a probe into Verenex's pre-qualification for the Exploration & Production
Sharing Agreement (EPSA) IV round. CNPC's takeover of Verenex - agreed earlier
this year - requires the consent of both Libya's National Oil Corporation (NOC) and
the General People's Council.
Consent to the deal has not yet been granted, with NOC saying it may exercise its
pre-emption rights and take control of the Canadian company itself. It now appears

that until the investigation is completed, there can be no progress on the Verenex
takeover.
Verenex said in a statement issued today that it had asked CNPC to agree to
extending the outside date for closure of the takeover until 24 August.
However, Verenex added: “Investors are cautioned that there can be no assurance
that consent to the offer by CNPC will be received soon from Libyan authorities, or
that a sale transaction will be concluded on the terms contemplated or at all." In the
statement, Verenex said the authorities are looking into allegations it was improperly
pre-qualified to bid in the 2005 EPSA round, in which it won Area 47. “Verenex
considers these allegations to be without merit and vigorously denies them,” the
company said. No specific improprieties or details of the allegations have been
provided to Verenex.” Verenex pointed out that the allegations are being made four
years after the award and coincide with its request for consent for the sale of the
company.
The company said that during talks held with NOC ahead of CNPC's offer, NOC had
indicated that it required an approval bonus in return for agreeing to Verenex's
takeover.
The Canadian player said that , based on indications from NOC, it estimated the bonus
would be about C$46.7 million (US$41.1 million). Verenex added NOC had indicated
that payment of the bonus would speed up the approval process, with formal consent
being granted within three to four weeks. "Since the execution of [the agreement with
CNPC] in February 2009, Verenex has actively sought NOC's consent to the
transaction. However, to date NOC has continually refused or failed to provide such
consent," Verenex said.
The company, which said it had enough cash to pay for planned work over the next
few months, added its annual and special meeting of shareholders will go ahead as
planned on 10 August.

Sunday, 21 June, 2009: Britain's government ratified a prisoner transfer deal with
Libya Wednesday that could allow the man convicted of the Lockerbie bombing to
serve out the remainder of his sentence in the North African country. The deal, signed

in November, would allow Abdel Basset Ali al-Megrahi, 57, to apply to be transferred
to Libya, the Foreign Office said. But al-Megrahi would have to agree to drop the
appeal against his conviction before being eligible for transfer. Scottish government
officials would also have to approve the move. It wasn't immediately clear whether
al-Megrahi, who has repeatedly vowed to clear his name, would seek to take up the
opportunity. The former Libyan secret agent is terminally ill with prostate cancer.

Scotland’s Justice Secretary. Kenny MacAskill, who is considering an application for
the transfer to Libya of the man convicted of the bombing, spoke by phone yesterday

also have discussions with representatives of British and American families and hear
the views of the Libyan government. But any decision on whether or not to transfer

judicial grounds alone, a statement said. A request by the Libyan authorities for

discussed the ways and means of further empowering women in Libya. The meeting

National Planning Council and attended by the Secretary of Women Affairs at the
General People's Congress, the UN resident representative in Libya as well as a

the Libyan authorities and the imprisoned leaders of the Libyan Islamic Fighting Group

mistakes, there are finally signs that the longtime antagonists may be getting closer to
reconciliation, a process that will rely in part on the LIFG’s renunciation of its merger
with al-Qaeda. Dr. Ali Sallabi, a Qatar-based Libyan Islamist and the main mediator
between the imprisoned LIFG leaders and the authorities, has been quoted as saying
the talks “are very encouraging” after meeting the six Shura Council members of the

show for services ended on Wednesday in Tripoli with the public and exhibi tors
expressing satisfaction with the fair. Ridha Kilani, manager of the Tunisian civil
engineering company, Kilani International, told PANA that during the trade show,
Libyan and Tunisian economic operators developed sound partnerships and set up
instruments serving as support to their activities to overcome obstacles. Mohamed
Ayachi, who is in charge of customers at the Tunisian-Libyan Bank (BTL),jointly
owned 50-50 by the two countries,hailed the trade show as an important

immigrants have been held in Libya, according to the pan-Arab newspaper Akhbar, in
its online version, Akhbar Libya Online. The Arabic-language website reports that the
Egyptian Swasia Centre for human rights and the fight against discrimination has
asked the Libyan and Egyptian government "to intervene and resolve the case of
6,000 Egyptian workers, including women and children, who have been detained by the
Libyan police authorities in Misratah for three days, for staying illegally in the
country". Moreover, the press agency of the Libyan government JANA underlines this
morning that the General Peoplés Committee for Public Security, the local interior
ministry, is again inviting foreigners in Libya "to regularise their residence permit

Thursday, 18 June, 2009: (ANSAmed) - ALGIERS - This morning Algerian President
Abdelaziz Bouteflika left Algiers for his visit to Tripoli. Press agency APS reports that
the visit is part of the latter's series of meetings with Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi.
No details have been supplied about the visit, two weeks after Seif al Islam al Gaddafi,
probable successor to the colonel, paid a visit to Algeria. The two leaders will
reportedly discuss the issue of Algerian prisoners held in Libyan prisons, as well as
bilateral cooperation and the fight against al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb, active in
the Sahara region on the border between Algeria, Libya, Mali and Niger. Around 50
Algerians have been held in Libyan prisons for years despite being pardoned in 2007.

the end of July 2009. Already the Embassy building has been located, inspected and

to Tripoli, it is learnt that he has visited the proposed Embassy building along with
Foreign Minister Rohita Bogollagama and it has been found suitable and approved.
Furtrhermore, President Mahinda Rajapaksa has also approved the appointment of the

Wednesday, 17 June, 2009: Shukri Ghanem, a senior official at Libya's oil industry and
its representative to the OPEC organization estimated in an interview to the
al-Arabiya network that the rise in oil prices would continue till the end of 2009.
Ghanem estimated that the price of an oil barrel will reach about $90 by the end of
2009, and the average barrel price throughout the year will stand at $80. Ghanem
noted that the recent rise in the prices of oil had nothing to do with the supply and
demand mechanism in the market but with speculations. He stressed that the supply
was big and that this should send the prices down, but that in practice the prices are

Tuesday, 16 June, 2009: SARAJEVO, JUNE 15 - The first consignment of steel
materials headed for Libya left the plants of the Sirbegovic Group of Gracanica, via
the Croatian port of Ploce. The Italian Trade Commission (ICE) office in Sarajevo
reports that the consignment is of 700 tonnes of material for the construction of 10
sports halls in Libya, for a total value of 16 million euros. Part of this material will be
used in the construction of a tourist resort with 500 apartments and suites, with a
total value of 32 million euros. The Sirbegovic Group will carry out the consignments
on a monthly basis, in accordance with the contract. [ANSAmed]

reserves, wants a bigger share of revenue from production- sharing agreements as it
seeks to review contracts with foreign companies, according to a Libyan oil official.
“Renegotiations are under way,” Chief Oil Contracts Negotiator Ahmed Al Ghaber
said in a statement posted on the Web site of the National Oil Corp. “They have led to
very good results, placing Libya among the countries that have reached new and
modern contracts”. Libya has urged ConocoPhillips, Hess Corp. and Marathon Oil
Corp. to agree to lower their shares of takings in an attempt to retain a larger share of
its oil wealth. It has already revised contracts with companies including Eni SpA,
Occidental Petroleum Corp., OMV AG, Total SA, Petro-Canada and Repsol YPF SA.

Treky, on Wednesday. Treky, who has served three times as an ambassador to the UN,

trip has led to a warming in relations. Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi apologized for
the excesses of Italy's 1911-1943 colonial rule, opening the door to billions of euros of
investment from the oil-rich Arab republic. On Saturday, Gaddafi received a

Rome that Libya is also looking with interest at the Italian infrastructure sector, and a

sites of Libyan oil refinery Tamoil as part of a probe into allegations that it violated
environmental regulations. Police, magistrates and specialists who took samples
entered Tamoil's refinery sites to see if there were "possible violations against legal
standards on the environment," said police from two cantons in a statement.
Investigators examined the refinery's installations as well as environmental protection
measures and procedures it had put in place in case of emergencies, they said. "The
specialists also took several samples for analysis and will report their findings to their
respective penal authorities," they said. Tamoil last year said the Libyan government
halted oil deliveries to Switzerland, after one of the sons of Libyan leader Moamer

Rome's biggest public park this week as he makes an historic first visit to Italy after 40
years as Libya's leader. Kadhafi, who arrives in Rome on Wednesday, will receive
guests in the tent in the Villa Doria Pamphili and will sleep in the sumptuous 13th
century palace of the same name that overlooks the park. The Libyan president will
bring an entourage of 200 to 300 people, according to an Italian source in Tripoli, who

marking his first visit to Italy by pitching a tent in a historic park in Rome, praised
Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi for apologizing for Italy’s colonial past in Africa.
Qaddafi, traveling with an entourage of hundreds for his three-day visit, was met by
Berlusconi at the airport. Later, the two held a news conference followed by a private
dinner. Berlusconi praised Qaddafi’s “great wisdom” and insights in the Middle East
conflict, while Qaddafi said Italy’s leader showed “great courage” in seeking to make
amends. The visit comes after Italy agreed last year to pay its former African colony
$5 billion over 25 years to compensate for the occupation from 1911 to 1943. That
paved the way for closer commercial ties between the two countries and increased

tanker heading to China beat off an attack by pirates in the Gulf of Aden, an oil
company official told AFP on Monday. "Pirates approached the vessel and began firing
warning shots," said Tarek Youssef of the Libyan National Maritime Transport
Company which leased the ship. "The captain refused to stop his ship and security
members on board riposted using water cannon," he said, adding that the pirates then

Sunday as the vessel, with a crew of 21 and carrying more than 144,000 tonnes of oil,

Tuesday, 9 June, 2009: Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi has requested a reconciliation
meeting with leaders of the Libyan Jewish community living in Rome, Italy, that may be
a first step towards settling the matter of Libyan Jews' restitution claims. Gaddafi is
scheduled to leave for a historic four-day visit to Rome on Wednesday. Yedioth
Ahronoth newspaper has learned that the date proposed for his meeting with the
heads of the Jewish community is next Shabbat. The Libyans have requested the
Italian Foreign Ministry, headed by Franco Frattini, assist in setting up the meeting.
Shalom Tshuva, deputy president of the Jewish community in Rome, and leader of the
Libyan Jewish community in the city, said, "Libya's Jews and Rome's Jews will not

Citadel Capital has been awarded an 118 million euro ($167.2 million) contract to
develop a local gas distribution network in Libya, the company said in a statement on
Sunday. The gas distribution network contract, which was awarded to Taqa Arabia,
Citadel's energy unit, will connect 370,000 households in the capital Tripoli, Benghazi
and Misrata, the company said. "In the energy field, those who have gone in so far

have been purely on the upstream side, said Citadel's managing director Marwan

a 1969 coup, is in his mid-60s and going strong. But in the past four years, Saif
al-Islam, the second-eldest son of Col. Gaddafi, and first by his second wife, Saif

would-be immigrants to Europe can apply for asylum there instead of trying to cross
the Mediterranean, a top justice official said Thursday. "We are going to begin
negotiations with Libya and see how we can lead this country to respect its
international obligations. We must be firm on this point," said EU Justice
Commissioner Jacques Barrot. "There is a paradox when asylum seekers have to pay
traffickers to have any chance that they be recognised as aslyum seekers," he told

more by the end of this year, and probably average $70-$80 for 2009 as a whole,
Libya's top oil official, Shokri Ghanem, said on Wednesday. Oil prices were mostly
below $50 a barrel in the first quarter of 2009, but have since risen close to $70 a
barrel, sparking fears higher crude could derail any economic recovery. "The price
may go to $90 or more by the end of the year," Ghanem told the Reuters Global

Thursday, 4 June, 2009: Libya is set to invest US$42 billion in the next five years to
develop and expand its upstream sector, according to Dr Shokir Ghanem, CEO of the
Libyan National Oil Company (LNOC). Speaking to ArabianOilandGas.com in an
exclusive interview that will be published in full in both Petrochemicals Middle East
and Oil and Gas Middle East, Dr Ghanem underlined Libya’s commitment to its
hydrocarbons industry. “The budget of LNOC is about this $7 billion this year
dedicated to development, oil companies are also going to invest between $1-2 billion.
In the next five years we plan to invest a total of $42 billion in development and
exploration,” Dr Ghanem said. Currently, Libyan oil production is about 1.5 million

immigration. That’s our tax money we are talking about so I need to be convinced that
Libya delivers! First let us have a look at the facts. Illegal Immigration is an “alarming
problem facing Malta” – not my choice of words but that of the director of the EU’s
border control agency Frontex, Illka Laitinen, in Sept. 2008. Illegal immigration is
challenging even residents of core villages in Malta such as Balzan, let alone other
coastal areas such as Birzebbugia,Marsa,and St Paul’s Bay. More than 15,000 illegal
immigrants have arrived in Malta since 2002. Illegal immigration is a direct result of

Boutwell (WHEC 719) arrived in Tubruq, Libya on May 31, 2009 as part of a theater
security cooperation mission to strengthen the maritime partnership between the
United States and Libya. Boutwell is the first U.S. military ship to visit Libya in more
than forty years. During the ship's three-day port visit, the crew will conduct various
training and leadership exchanges with Libyan maritime enforcement personnel and
also participate in several cultural exchanges. Training topics range from international

defined by 3-D seismic data and has a number of different target levels. The planned
total depth of the well is 4,700 meters (15,419 ft). The well, which is being drilled by
drillship Songa Saturn, is expected to take around 90 days to drill. The well is a
commitment well for the license, which was awarded in 2005 and expires in March

joint venture partner Oil Search. A1-18/01 is a wildcat well designed to test the

consignment of cholera and water treatment drugs as part of its continued
contribution towards helping the country improve health and sanitation. The North
African country last year sent a planeload of drugs and nine medical experts to
Zimbabwe. The latest consignment of drugs includes four tonnes of chlorine powder
for water treatment, 500 boxes of sodium chloride, 500 boxes of glucose,200 boxes of

Tuesday, 2 June, 2009: Royal Jordanian Airlines is resuming services to Libyan city
Benghazi on Monday, some 30 years after suspending the route. On Sunday, the
Jordanian carrier said it was reintroducing the route, which will operate twice weekly,
following an increase in traffic between the two nations. The airline’s president and
CEO Samer Majali added: “There is remarkable and active traffic of businessmen and

said that Libya with its supplies of natural gas could be a good partner for Ukraine's
chemical enterprises which use natural gas as a raw material. She said while opening
the talks in the Libyan capital of Tripoli that "Ukrainian chemical plants are
economically viable when they have enough natural gas. Libya could help these
enterprises make profit." Ms Tymoshenko noted that the privatization of OJSC Odesa
Port-Side Plant is currently underway and suggested Libya could participate in this
process. She said that the enterprise's location on the Black Sea coast and a large
volume of mineral fertilizers which it produces could be of interest to Libyan partners.

Monday, 1 June, 2009: Libya has asked Brussels for $1 billion (€707 million) worth of
technical assistance and equipment in exchange for more collaboration with Europe
on the illegal immigration front. Following its recent decision to collaborate more
closely with Italy and take back immigrants who had left from its shores, Libya is now
piling pressure on the EU to provide it with boats, helicopters, trucks and other
equipment in an attempt to patrol its borders. In its efforts to offer tangible help to
Malta and Italy to curb these migration flows, the EU is more inclined to offer
